Chinley Primary School Curriculum
Our Curriculum provides children with a broad range of activities and subjects which we believe will ensure that the children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and to be good, global citizens in the future. The subject pages provide an overview of what the children will learn at each stage of their time at Chinley School as well as some additional information about how our lessons are structured and how we use assessment information. Our accredited reading scheme/phonics scheme is Jolly Phonics which is supplemented by the associated Jolly Classroom materials. With regards to Religious Education the children learn about a range of religions incuding Christianity, in line with statutory guidance parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the RE curriculum. If parents wish to do so they should contact the headteacher in order to discuss this further.
Art
In Art and Design we aim to give every child the knowledge and skills they need to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We encourage them in their critical thinking both of their own work, their peers and the work of great artists and craftspeople from a wide variety of cultures and time-periods. All children will have the opportunity to draw, paint, print, collage, and sculpt using a range of materials.
Computing
At Chinley Primary School, our aim is to produce learners who are confident and effective users of technology. Children learn how to program computers through coding. They will also become competent users of information and communication technology and develop their digital literacy when carrying out internet research.
Design and Technology
Design and Technology (D&T) at Chinley School supports children in using creativity to design and make products with real life in mind. D&T is multi-disciplined drawing on other subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. We follow the National Curriculum suggested subject content.
Geography
In Geography we aim to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Pupils will develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places, including their defining physical and human characteristics, to understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interconnected and how they vary and change over time.
History
In History we aim to help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. We want to equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Learners should know and understand the history of Britain and the world as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day: how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world. They will gain a historical perspective of both short and long-term timescales, and make some connections between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history.
English
Welcome to Chinley Primary School’s English page. We aim to help all children at our school to develop their skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening. From Reception to Year 6, children are taught: to read easily, fluently and with good understanding and to write clearly, accurately and coherently.
Mathematics
Mathematics is a core subject in the National Curriculum and is taught daily to all pupils throughout the school. It is taught as a single subject but is also reinforced through cross-curricular topics. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme from Year 1 - Year 6.
Music
Music at Chinley School aims to encourage children to enjoy musical activities, providing them with the skills and confidence to participate in musical activities including singing, composing and playing musical instruments. We provide pupils with opportunities to perform, sing and play music for a range of audiences. In addition, specialist music teachers provide subsidised instrument tuition as well as school funded tuition for all Year 4 pupils.
Physical Education
At Chinley School, we have prioritised 4 aims for Physical Education which are: - Increase participation in sport and healthy activities. - Encourage pupils to adopt healthy lifestyles. - Increase pupil participation in competitive sport. - Provide training for staff so that sport provision is embedded and sustained in our school (CPD)
PSHE
Chinley Primary School considers that personal, social, health and economic education (PSHEE) play an important part in the curriculum. It is planned in order to help give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to live independent, confident, healthy lives and to prepare them to become responsible, informed, active citizens in our school community and beyond. We follow the Character Education scheme designed by Birmingham University. PSHEE education covers the following three main areas, each of which requiring the learning of knowledge, skills and understanding, planned to ensure progression and continuity. 1. Religious Education
Chinley School follows the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus for RE (2020-2025). The children engage in learning about a range of worldwide religions including Christianity; Islam; Judiasm; Hinduism and Humanism. We learn about festivals, values and beliefs, sacred books and most importantly what similarities different religions share.
Science
At Chinley Primary School we aim to ensure that all pupils: • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Relationships and Sex Education
The RSE curriculum is designed to be taught within the programme for PSHE and Citizenship so that children receive their sex education in the wider context of relationships, thereby preparing them for the changes ahead. Children will: - develop confidence and a sense of responsibility - prepare to play an active role as citizens - develop a healthier, safer lifestyle - develop good relationships and have respect for differences between people A consultation in November 2022 provided parents with an opportunity to feedback their views and influence what was being taught. 14 parents responded to the consultation and resulted in a new focus of "Getting a mobile phone for the first time". Parents felt that using mobile technology safely and courteously would be a good addition to the curriculum in Years 5 and 6.
Curriculum - Teaching and Learning
The curriculum design at Chinley School promotes high standards in all areas of learning and provides rich and memorable experiences. It should equip children to contribute to the global and local community in which they live, to enjoy happy and safe lives and be well prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
